About JP Szymkowicz

My name is J.P. Szymkowicz, and I’m running to be your next Attorney General for the District of Columbia. I am a fifth-generation Washingtonian, and my wife is a DC native. My parents live in our neighborhood; my grandparents lived in Anacostia. For seven years, I’ve served as the elected Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner for Foxhall.

D.C. is my home, and I’m fighting for its future. As a Commissioner, I’ve worked across all eight Wards to improve the lives of DC residents — advocating for victims; pushing for more resources for the Metropolitan Police Department to hire, train, and support officers; and fighting for solutions that address the root causes of crime: better education, economic opportunity, and safe, affordable housing.

Our city faces serious challenges. A lack of effective punishments for convicted criminals has led to needless death and trauma. Violence, vehicle theft — even just higher prices due to shoplifting — are damaging to our communities. Unscrupulous landlords allow residents to live in buildings with code violations, exposing them to fire hazards, mold, and structural dangers. Unlicensed contractors prey on vulnerable homeowners and often leave defects that must be corrected. Bad actors face few consequences, and families feel unsafe — leading some to move out of the city, and others to avoid coming here.

As Attorney General, I will bring back a culture of rule-following and public safety. The Attorney General’s Office has powerful tools, which I will utilize to make our city safer:

• I will crack down on crime and ensure that there are meaningful consequences which actually deter criminals from traumatizing victims.

• I will prosecute consumer protection violations against predatory landlords and contractors who exploit DC residents.

• I will enforce housing codes and hold landlords accountable for dangerous conditions.

• I will combat public corruption and ensure government serves the people and not special interests.

• I will reduce traffic accidents by removing vehicles from the streets whenever there are unpaid traffic violations.

• I will protect civil rights and ensure equal justice for all Washingtonians.

I will look at each case individually and ensure that the punishment fits the crime. And I will do this while treating every person — a victim or someone accused of a crime — in a fair and equitable manner in conformity with the rights afforded to all people by the Constitution.

At the beginning of each of my four terms as a Commissioner, I have taken an oath to “support and defend the Constitution of the United States, [to perform my duties] to the best of my ability without fear or favor; [to] exercise my best judgment and [to] consider each matter before me from the viewpoint of the best interest of the District of Columbia as a whole.” I have honored that oath. I will continue to honor my oath as your Attorney General.
